Artists-in-Residence

The experts teaching future experts.

In 2005, Steward’s Fine Arts Department introduced the Artist-in-Residence program, giving students the unique experience of working with and learning from artists in a variety of mediums. Through this program, students work directly with professional artists, who subsequently become mentors and are available to teach, guide, and answer questions throughout the process of creating works of art both visual and performing. Students across all three divisions and the visiting artists work together to create artwork or present performances for the school, leaving lasting evidence of the time spent together.

A sample of the artists who have recently enriched our community:

  • Lee Baskerville (professional artist speaker series)
  • Jeff Cole (Shakespeare theatre director who worked with Upper School acting classes)
  • Tasha McKelvy (local ceramic artist who helped students create clay whistles)
  • Stephen Norfleet (professional jazz musician who conducted Jazz Improvisation Workshops with instrumental music students)
  • Baxter Perkinson (local dentist and artist worked with art students to produce large watercolor collages)
  • Steve Prince (visual artist who introduced intricate woodcutting and printing techniques to students in all three divisions)
  • Foster Solomon (award-winning actor and film-maker who directed "The Comedy of Errors")
  • Susan Sanford (professional actor and director who directed "The Man Who Came to Dinner")
  • Ed Trask (local painter who worked with students from all divisions to create various murals around the school)
  • Jiaru Wang (renowned watercolorist and illustrator in China who taught students watercolor techniques)

Steward is an atmosphere that fosters confidence—something we have seen in all three of our kids. Whether it is playing a new sport, running for a seat on the Honor Council, or singing a solo on Talent Night, they have been encouraged to try, to experience, and to grow.
