Join Jo Boaler—Stanford professor, noted TED speaker, and author—to learn how confidence, practice, and teaching math as a creative process can unlock success.

Wondering how to support your child’s enthusiasm and ability in mathematics? Not sure how to begin? Encouraging your child with a can-do attitude will help. The best way to support your child’s success in STEM is to encourage their confidence and enthusiasm.

Jo Boaler will visit The Steward School on November 7 to discuss cutting-edge research and techniques to support academic success, encourage enthusiasm, and promote brain development. She’s helping lead the renaissance of math education and popularizing new techniques of teaching math that encourage a growth mindset. Research suggests that math education helps students develop resiliency, and working through problems grows your brain’s capacity to think.

Dr. Boaler is frequently featured in the media. She is speaking at Steward as our first Bryan Innovation Lab Visiting Innovator of the year. Steward faculty have already begun integrating her concepts into the classroom. Now, parents, grandparents, and fellow educators will have the opportunity to hear her speak, learn about her research, and discover what can be done at home to encourage and build success in our children, especially girls, in STEM.

  • 8-9:30 a.m.—Lecture and Discussion in the Lora M. Robins Theatre
  • 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m.—Lessons and workshops with students and faculty
  • 3:10-4:30 p.m.—Math innovation-focused Maker Fair in the Bryan Lab, where interactive stations will help us explore the creativity of math. We will feature innovative new techniques that explore and celebrate math. These techniques take a subject that was once anxiety-driven, and turn it into celebrated creative play for the entire family. Many activities will be replicable at home, and include spirographs, cooking demos, Fibonacci sequence in nature table, statistics games, iPads for math, and more. There is a wonderful world of creative, visual, and dynamic math modeling to explore. Join us as we discover together!

This program is made possible through grants from The Robins Foundation, E. E. Ford Foundation, and Luck Companies Foundation.

Steward Voices

Steward is an atmosphere that fosters confidence—something we have seen in all three of our kids. Whether it is playing a new sport, running for a seat on the Honor Council, or singing a solo on Talent Night, they have been encouraged to try, to experience, and to grow.

Steward Voices

Steward is the right place for Micah and Kiri because they are able to develop strong connections with their teachers, which in turn facilitates confidence and resilience in their learning. Everyone at Steward knows your name and makes you feel so welcome.

Steward Voices

Steward helped me develop the skills I needed to succeed in college and the courage and confidence to set competitive career goals for myself. But, these skills weren’t lessons I learned just in Steward’s classrooms; they came from the athletic fields, in the hallways, and during Honor Council meetings, too.
- Grace Henderson ’10
