AfterSchool Care Program

A licensed program offering afternoon care for grades JK-8.

Lower School AfterSchool Care Program

The Steward School AfterSchool Care Program, licensed by the Virginia Department of Social Services, is offered to students in junior kindergarten through fifth grade from 3-6 p.m. every day that school is in session. The exceptions are on the days vacations begin and some early dismissal days. On early dismissal days, we are open from dismissal time (usually 11:30 a.m.) until 6 p.m. Students are supervised by Steward School faculty and staff. A typical daily schedule is as follows:

  • 3-3:30 p.m. Registration and Snack
  • 3:30-4 p.m. Playground
  • 4-5 p.m. Homework
  • 5-6 p.m. Free Time

All Lower School students are automatically enrolled in the program when their enrollment contracts are received for the school year. Other than AfterSchool Care, supervision for children after 3 p.m. is not available, and emergencies and delays can occur. Students not picked up by 3:20 p.m. will be sent to AfterSchool Care.

A copy of your child’s birth certificate (or passport) must be submitted by all new students to complete the AfterSchool Care registration. The Department of Social Services, our licensing agency, prohibits the admission of students who are not properly registered into our program.

Parents will be billed monthly by the Business Office and the cost will be as follows:

  • $8 per hour for students who attend daily (four or five days per week)
  • $10 per hour for students who attend weekly (three or fewer days per week)
  • $12 per hour for drop-in students

AfterSchool Care charges begin at 3 p.m. Please note that there is an additional $30 late fee for each fifteen minutes (or any part thereof) past the 6 p.m. pick-up time.

Information regarding our licensing by the Virginia Department of Social Services is available upon request from Ingrid Moore, director of Lower School. Please contact her with any questions you may have at or (804) 565-2324. The AfterSchool Care cell phone, (804) 512-1127, is also operational every school day from 3-6 p.m. Please feel free to call either number.

Lower School Enrichment Programs

Throughout the school year, we offer three sessions of after-school enrichment classes to Steward students. In the past, our program has featured classes in cooking, watercolor painting, pottery, science, comedy, sports, and more. We offer favorite classes time and again while adding new and exciting ones to our enrichment curriculum based on availability and student interest. Flyers describing the classes are distributed throughout the school year. Classes are held for six-week sessions and typically cost about $100 per student, per class. Enrollment is limited, so we ask parents to enroll early!

In between the sessions, we offer two sessions of academic enrichment classes in language arts and math for students in grades 1-4. The academic sessions are led by a CAL tutor and typically meet two days a week for four weeks.

Middle School AfterSchool Care Program

AfterSchool Care is available to all Middle School students on an ‘as needed’ basis. Parents do not have to enroll their children in AfterSchool Care, as is the case in Lower School. However, there are a few important rules for parents and students to remember.

  • Middle School students not picked up by 3:30 p.m. (who are not participating in athletic practices) must sign in with the AfterSchool Care teacher in the Middle School Dining Commons.
  • Snacks may be obtained from the Spartan Shop after checking in to AfterSchool Care.
  • Students may sign out to attend athletic games*– not to observe practices.
  • Students may not sign out until their parent or pick-up person is in the LS circle.
  • Parents may call the AfterSchool Care phone number to send child out for pick-up. The number is (804) 356-2388.
  • Students should be picked up by 6 p.m. After 6 p.m. there is an additional charge.

*If a student has a parent's permission to sign out to attend an athletic game, the student is no longer under AfterSchool Care's supervision, and there is no charge for that time.

To contact AfterSchool Care, parents may call (804) 356-2388. If you have questions, please contact Cindy Grissom at

Steward Voices

Steward is an atmosphere that fosters confidence—something we have seen in all three of our kids. Whether it is playing a new sport, running for a seat on the Honor Council, or singing a solo on Talent Night, they have been encouraged to try, to experience, and to grow.
- Dan and Kathi Campbell, Parents of Abbie ’19, Emma ’17, and Ben ’14

Steward Voices

Steward is the right place for Micah and Kiri because they are able to develop strong connections with their teachers, which in turn facilitates confidence and resilience in their learning. Everyone at Steward knows your name and makes you feel so welcome.
- Paul and Janet Yoon, Parents of Kiri ’27 and Micah ’26

Steward Voices

Steward helped me develop the skills I needed to succeed in college and the courage and confidence to set competitive career goals for myself. But, these skills weren’t lessons I learned just in Steward’s classrooms; they came from the athletic fields, in the hallways, and during Honor Council meetings, too.
- Grace Henderson ’10

Steward Voices

Steward provides Andrew with a nurturing environment which fosters his individualism, develops exemplary character traits, and continuously provides him with creative learning experiences. Consequently, Andrew ‘loves’ school and anticipates each day with joy, enthusiasm, and excitement.
- Betsy Jollay, Grandmother of Andrew O’Leary ’25

Steward Voices

I love all that The Steward School has done for Trace. Steward has uncovered Trace’s talents, celebrated his individuality, and strengthened his belief in himself. The faculty and staff offer an amazing balance of challenge and comfort, encouraging the best from all students. I can’t imagine Trace being anywhere else. Thank you, Steward School.
- Ron Coles, Father of Trace Coles ’19 and Grade 5 Teacher
