At The Steward School, the early childhood experience is designed to meet the developmental needs of four- to six-year-olds. Opportunities to play, investigate, problem-solve, build, and foster students’ natural curiosity lay the groundwork for a lifetime of learning.
Small classes led by caring teachers encourage students to develop vital skills such as mindfulness, empathy, and responsibility. Our youngest Spartans benefit from hands-on learning experiences inside and beyond the classroom – from engineering classes in the Bryan Innovation Lab to teaming up with senior students throughout the year for friendship and fun. And learning extends beyond reading, math, and global studies into “specials”: PE, art, music, Spanish, the library, technology, character education, and (beginning in kindergarten) theatre. As a JK-12 campus, our youngest students have access to a wide range of educational opportunities beyond those available in preschool.
Within the Classroom: Junior Kindergarten
Steward’s junior kindergarten program challenges and supports children. Pre-literacy lessons build foundational skills in alphabet knowledge, phonological awareness, print concepts, and oral language. Nature Play occurs daily and serves as a direct bridge into kindergarten reading and writing workshops. Math instruction includes number recognition 0-10, shapes, patterns, and measurement.
Within the Classroom: Kindergarten
Under the guidance of caring teachers, kindergarten students strengthen their phonics skills and learn to recognize letters and write one-syllable words. Our program utilizes the IMSE curriculum based on the Orton-Gillingham approach, which combines sight, hearing, touch, and movement. The reading environment is enriched through read-alouds – a favorite activity among our young learners. Math instruction for kindergarteners focuses on building a strong number sense for students as they develop an understanding of patterns (addition/subtraction) of numbers 0-10 and identification of numbers.
