Standout Spartans: Ethan Dumeer '24 and Elijah Kauffman '28
The Steward School
A weekend of music making for two talented Spartans
Congratulations to Ethan Dumeer ’24 and Elijah Kauffman ’28, who represented Steward at the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association District One Band held at Highland Springs High School. These talented clarinetists are taught by Middle/Upper School Instrumental Music Teacher John McAlister.
“The weekend was so much fun,” said Ethan. “The musicians got to know each other during our first rehearsal, and we spent two days creating an environment where we could develop our musical abilities and appreciation. It was so fulfilling to participate in this with so many other students who were equally invested in and passionate about music. In Symphonic Band, we spoke over Zoom with the composer of one of our songs and discussed the deeper meaning behind its composition. The whole experience was musically enriching and I'm super happy that I got to be a part of it.”
Elijah added, “We had the privilege of learning and playing a nice selection of pieces, and it was nice to meet other musicians who cared about music. The experience helped me grow as a musician and was a great time.”
