Standout Spartan: Jessica Conley

The Steward School
Inspired poet pens new book
Congratulations to Upper School English Teacher Jessica Conley, author of “Species,” a collection of poetry that will go to press in January 2025. “Species,” a kind of musical counterpoint, serves as a poetic framework for acknowledging the music — its melodies and dissonances — of everyday life.

“I have written poetry for many years,” said Ms. Conley, whose favorite poets include Rainer Maria Rilke, Terrance Hayes, and Philip Levine. “I am inspired by poetry's unique ability to express the ineffable art of music. I especially enjoy writing on long bikepacking trips through wildernesses I have never seen, when I am forced to confront nature, fatigue, and awe each day."
