Standout Spartan: Julia Rhamy '26

Congratulations to Julia Rhamy, whose “Fast Fashion” (acrylic on denim) is a Gold Key award winner in the 2024 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. The Scholastic Art and Writing Competition is the nation's longest-running educational initiative supporting student achievement in the visual and literary arts. 

A panel of artists and educators served as judges, and Julia was one of more than 2,000 students who entered artwork. There is an exhibit of art and writing submissions on display through February 19 at The Visual Arts Center of Richmond (1812 West Main Street, Richmond). A reception for all award winners will be held on February 17 from 1-4 p.m. at the Center, with a ceremony for Gold Key winners at 2 p.m. on the same day at Dogwood Middle School (1701 Floyd Avenue; next to the Center). A national judging of Gold Key works will be held in the coming weeks in New York. 

Julia said, “I’ve always liked creating art … to be recognized at this level is amazing.” Asked what inspired her artwork, she said, “I’ve always thought ‘fast fashion’ was a huge issue in our society today. We tend to throw out clothes once trends die out. I made this piece with that issue in mind.”

This talented Spartan says the best thing about being part of the Steward community is her ability “to grow and flourish in the arts. Everyone here is so supportive and willing to help. There is someone who always has your back and is there to cheer you on.”
