Standout Spartan: Maggie Browning '34

The Steward School
Digging in to help others
Maggie Browning ’34 loves to garden. She and her family (including her siblings Emmett ’32 and Reuben’31) live on a farm, and over the years they have grown a variety of fruits and veggies, including watermelon, cantaloupe, carrots, beets, and pumpkins.

“I love that you can help the world out by growing things,” said Maggie, who this year decided to sell some of the family’s homegrown pumpkins and use the proceeds to buy packaged snacks for Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). Each year, Steward teams up with a local organization for Whirled Peace Day, which brings together students, faculty, and staff in a joyful celebration of peace. This year, the school partnered with RMHC and collected individually wrapped food items to benefit the non-profit, which provides a home-away-from-home for families with children receiving care at local hospitals. “It feels good to do good,” said Maggie.

Growing things, she added, “is easier than buying things at the grocery store. It is fun to watch a seed grow into a plant and then be able to enjoy what grew with my family.”

We are so proud of you, Maggie!
