Beloved Tutor, Cherished Friend

“Everywhere she went, she’d get stopped by people wanting to chat and catch up. Students, parents, friends … if you walked alongside Roberta Wiener on campus or in the community, you’d make a lot of stops!” said Cheryl Lafferty, division assistant for Steward’s Center for the Advancement of Learning (CAL). Mrs. Wiener, who passed away on June 1, 2024, served as a Middle/Upper School tutor at The Steward School for 23 years. She is deeply missed by all those who knew her. 

“She helped students figure out how to manage their classes and assignments and prepare for tests,” said Ms. Lafferty. “She was a conscientious, dedicated tutor who also helped out when we organized Lower School homework clubs years ago. I could always count on her to attend a Steward event, too. If there was a school gathering or a play, she always said yes!”

Yaa Agyekum, director of CAL and assistant director of Lower School, described Mrs. Wiener as a compassionate educator who was patient and kind.

“She truly cared for her students,” said Ms. Agyekum. “As they heeded her sage advice, they improved their grades, and most importantly, gained confidence in themselves. We were so fortunate to share Roberta’s talent, wisdom, and skill with the Steward community.” 

Added Ms. Lafferty, “Roberta didn’t sweat the small stuff. She instilled in her students the same stick-to-it-iveness of asking questions to solve problems. She was always all-in: at work and with her family. We miss her terribly.” 

Mrs. Wiener is survived by her husband, Richard; three children; and six grandchildren. The CAL staff plans to honor Mrs. Wiener’s memory by gifting books to the Middle/Upper School library.
