  • Fun in the Sun at the Steward Summer Experience




Join The Steward Summer Experience for a summer of fun, with more than 100 camps in arts, athletics, academics, technology, innovation, community service, and more!

We offer morning and afternoon camps, as well as early morning drop off and After Care. Create a summer plan that works for your family, all at our convenient West End location. 

Traditionally, more than 50% of our campers attend other schools during the school year, so students can expect to meet new friends and reunite with familiar faces.

Registration opening dates are December 1 for returning campers/Steward families and January 1 for new campers who do not attend Steward. Scroll down for an at-a-glance calendar and detailed descriptions to learn more about our camps.

  • Afternoon Adventures (Gr. K-5)

    Afternoon Adventures is the perfect way to extend your camp day. Every Monday afternoon is spent at Steward with a variety of entertaining visitors, and field trips are taken to local places every Tuesday through Friday. This camp can be done separately or as part of an entire Summer Experience day. This is a popular afternoon offering that fills up early.

  • Best Week of Summer (Gr. K-6)

    To close out the summer, join us for an extra-fun, week-long extravaganza of on-campus activities and off-campus field trips. Students will meet at Steward each morning and head off for full- and half-day adventures. Examples of activities include arts and crafts, trips to Fredericksburg FunLand or Go Ape ropes course, and other exciting opportunities in and around the Richmond area. This is our most popular camp.

  • Bricks 4 Kidz Junior Engineers: Old Wild West (Gr. JK - K)

    Have your preschool child join our Junior Engineer Camp! Campers will follow model plans as they build with DUPLO® Bricks. The camp will help children improve fine motor skills, build self-esteem, and learn important classroom lessons such as organization and following directions.

  • Dance (Gr. K-2)

    During this camp, children will practice different styles of dance, explore creative motion, and learn ballet basics and the high-energy styles of jazz and hip hop. This is the perfect way for children to learn about dance, make new friends, and get moving! All skill levels are welcome, and no dance experience is necessary.

  • Dream It, Build It (Gr. JK-K)

    Campers will stoke their creative passions by conducting science experiments and building various models and designs. The building phase will focus on reusing real-world materials to create existing and imaginative designs. Science experiments will connect young students with the natural world while helping to engender a lifelong love of science.
    Date and Time: July 28 - August 1; 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

  • Itty Bitty Yogis: Pose, Run & Have Fun! (Gr. K-2)

    Join Itty Bitty Yogis for a week of yoga play and mindfulness fun at The Steward School!  Your camper will spend the week balancing their bodies and brains as they discover yoga through yoga-inspired games, yoga stories, partner poses, and mindfulness crafts. This is not your typical yoga camp! Our campers will pose, run, and have some fun as they learn all about yoga and mindfulness in an engaging environment.  
    Date and Time: July 14-18, July 21-25; 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.

  • Junior All-Sports (Gr. JK-K)

    Does your young athlete love sports? In this sports camp specially designed for our littlest campers, budding athletes will enjoy an action-packed week of soccer, kickball, and other favorites. Each day will have sessions in two or more different sports with an emphasis on sportsmanship and teamwork. Fundamentals will be reviewed and reinforced each day, followed by prizes and popsicles.

  • Junior Detective Agency (Gr. JK-K)

    Calling all gumshoes! Use school-ready skills throughout the week to explore clues, investigate, and solve. Campers will gain introductory knowledge about forensics and fun mysteries. Use problem-solving, research, and teamwork in a fun setting, working through each daily puzzle in this fun “who-dun-it” camp. Put your ultimate sleuthing skills to the test!

  • Kindergarten Discovery Camp (Gr. K)

    At this fun camp, students will develop school-readiness skills and bridge the gap from JK/preschool to kindergarten. The activities will help students feel comfortable in a new setting while they are introduced to the routines of kindergarten. Children will explore the classroom, meet new friends, and interact with faculty. This camp is suitable for any student preparing for kindergarten and developing the skills necessary for success in school.

  • Les Petit Chefs: Mini Cooking Camp (Gr. JK- K)

    Our youngest campers will learn proper kitchen techniques, including hygiene, safety, and cooking. This camp is designed to connect children to the joy of cooking and establish a love of healthy eating. Expect your camper to want to help out at home after they spend a week in this camp making delicious and healthy recipes.

  • Little Bookworms (Gr. JK-K)

    This camp will be focused on learning language arts skills specifically related to the process of reading — concepts of print, vocabulary, and writing; associating letters with sounds; and blending letter sounds to form words and sentences. Campers will explore rich literature and writing through centers, individual and small group instruction, exploration of books, and play to help with reading readiness.

  • Magic Mouse Clubhouse (GR. JK-K)

    Grab those big ears and white gloves as the happiest helpers engage in the most magical camp on earth. Campers will engage in a themed activity each day: finding fish friends, exploring the castle, or solving mysteries. Each day will include school readiness, fine and gross motor skill development, pattern and letter recognition, counting, and math skills during a fun-filled week.

  • Mini-Math Brains (Gr. JK-K)

    Mini-Math Brains is for all young mathematicians. Campers will learn about basic addition and subtraction, graphing, telling time, fractions, word problems, and money. Campers will have plenty of time for fun with education-based play and will develop math skills to help with future STEAM success. The JK and K groups are separated to ensure age-appropriate skill development.

  • Nature Play Camp (Gr. K-1)

    Inspired by our Nature Play School program, we're introducing the Nature Play Camp. This provides a social environment for children to explore, play, and be creative in nature. Engaging in hands-on activities and enjoying free play, the camp will center around the Bryan Lab's gardens and woodlands, aiming to foster children's appreciation for and connection to the natural world.
    Date and Time: June 9-13, August 11-15; 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.

  • Paws and Claws: Animal Hospital (Gr. JK-K)

    Calling all young animal lovers! Join us for an exciting, hands-on week where campers become junior veterinarians! This unique camp introduces children to the world of animal care, compassion, and responsibility through fun, age-appropriate activities. Each day, campers will "check in" their stuffed animal patients for wellness exams, discover how to bandage and care for injuries, and even learn about real-life veterinary tools. With animal-themed crafts, guided play, and interactive stories, our junior vets will learn what it takes to keep animals happy and healthy.

  • Scribbles and Giggles (Gr. JK-K)

    This is a school-readiness offering that will work to acclimate your camper to components of the traditional academic curriculum at an independent or public school. This is a process-oriented class that will promote essential school-readiness skills. Each week will build on information covered in the previous camp session; however, the camp is accessible for new students to join at any time. Structured play, outdoor time, and crafts will be included as essential components of this camp to help your little one learn.

    Once Upon a Time – June 9-13

    …in a land far, far away…! Join us as we explore timeless classics and new-age folk tales. Bring your favorite storybook characters to life in this imaginative and fantastical camp. And they’ll ride into the sunset happily ever after! 

    Numbers Rock! – June 16-20

    Come join us for a rockin’ week full of numbers! Our counting campers will explore numbers through arts and crafts activities! Numbers Rock will expose campers to number values, patterns, and counting!

    Happy Camper – June 23-27

    Come gather ‘round the campfire! Campers will dive into books, games, and arts and crafts all about camping, like map skills, making a “campfire,” and exploring the outdoors. Have your child learn what it's like to be a real camper!

    Blast Off! – July 14-18

    3, 2, 1…blast off! Suit up for a mission to the International Space Station or train for a landing on the moon. Campers will explore and learn as we travel through space looking for planets, black holes, aliens, and galaxies in this thrilling new camp!

    Buggin Out! – July 21-25

    Join us for a week-long exploration of bugs and insects! Our campers will learn about different bug species, their habitats, and their unique characteristics through hands-on activities! Have your camper immerse themselves in the world of bugs and make new friends!

    Deep Blue Sea – July 28-August 1

    “Water” you doing this week?!! Dive into the deep blue sea with us as we get to know many of the creatures that live in the ocean. Campers will dive into books, educational videos, and arts and crafts to learn all about the vast ocean network that is home to orcas, seahorses, and guppies. We’re “shore” your child will “reel-y” love it!

    Alphabet Art – August 4-8

    Now I know my ABCs, won’t you come and draw with me? Make the alphabet come to life through an exciting variety of arts and crafts activities! Alphabet Art will expose campers to learning letter-sound relationships, letter formation, and sensory experiences. M N O ordinary camp experience!

    Magical Creatures – August 11-15

    Unicorns and dragons and fairies, oh my! Come get magical with us as we learn about mythical creatures and even dream up our own. Campers will dive into books, games, and arts and crafts riddled with mermaids, ogres, and yetis!

  • Soccer Shots (Gr. JK-K)

    Shoot and SCORE this summer with soccer! Each young athlete will learn new skills on the field and cultivate important values such as teamwork and good sportsmanship. Students will learn how to pass, dribble, and shoot through fun and interactive team games.

  • Spanish (Gr. K-2)

    Hola! Campers will participate in fun, engaging, and enriching activities in Spanish. Each day is full of fun songs, games, crafts, and storytelling.  Whether new to the language or experienced, we will have a great time!

  • Spartan Adventures: Fabulous Fourth (Gr. K-5)

    Join us for a midsummer week of adventures and activities off campus. Gear up for the holiday weekend by coming to Steward and going out on full- and half-day field trips around the greater Richmond area. We’ll close out our Fabulous Fourth holiday week with a half-day festival on campus on Thursday morning, complete with inflatables, arts and crafts, popsicles, music and more! Space will be limited for this camp.

  • Storybook Crafts (Gr. JK)

    Come join us for a morning full of storytelling and crafting! Campers will get to connect a new story each day to a fun craft. Crafts will include but are not limited to painting, cutting, gluing and music/movement will accompany each story. This crafty camp is for kids who love to explore new books and create new things! We will have three different themed sessions throughout the summer.

  • Summer Craft Club (Gr. K-5)

    This DIY class is for all the artsy-craftsy kids who love to express themselves with one-of-a-kind masterpieces. Students plan, design, and create various creations. Discover your crafty side and sharpen your creativity as we design many mementos to be treasured!

  • Summer Safari (Gr. JK - K)

    The safari is for all the wildlife animal lovers. Campers will learn about animals both in captivity and in wildlife and explore their habitats. Our little zoologists will have time for fun with education-based play and exploratory crafts all about animals!

  • Super Scientists (Gr. JK)

    Our youngest campers will enjoy the magic of science in this camp focused on experimentation. Learn about how things fly, chemical reactions, and physical science while exploring the natural world. Building and engineering will also be designed as campers learn about what makes science work.

  • All Sports K&L (Gr. 3-5)

    This full-day sports camp will take place at K&L Sports in nearby Montpelier with transportation provided to and from Steward each day. K&L Sports promotes sportsmanship and camaraderie while increasing athletic skill level, using a 6-to-1 student-to-pro ratio. Each week, the activities include tennis, basketball, baseball, horseshoes, swimming, football, soccer, whiffle ball, dodgeball, kickball, frisbee, hiking, and other field and team games.

  • All Things Tie-Dye (Gr. 1-5)

    Campers will use different tie-dye techniques to create several different designs, patterns, and color combinations. Using their own unique artistic lens and creativity, campers will make several different items with different materials and techniques. Stay groovy in this artistic blast from the past camp.

  • Around the World in 80 Days (Gr. 3-4)

    Embark on an unforgettable journey with us as we travel Around the World in 80 Days! Guided by the classic story, this camp will take kids on a thrilling global adventure without ever leaving campus. Each day, we'll "visit" a new country, exploring its culture, traditions, and landmarks through hands-on activities, exciting challenges, and creative arts and crafts. Our itinerary includes everything from constructing mini hot air balloons to decoding ancient maps and learning dances from around the world.

  • Baseball (Gr. 1-5)

    Steward’s Baseball Camp focuses on fundamentals and skill development. Each day, there is an exciting game, and each camper receives individualized attention and drills for continued improvement at home. The daily routine will include work on throwing, fielding, and hitting, followed by the opportunity to apply new and improved skills in the games. Each camper will leave camp a better baseball player with a focus on the fundamentals of the game.

  • Bob Foley’s Next Level Basketball (Gr. 1-5) - FIND OUT IF REGISTRATION OPEN

    Next Level Basketball camp is designed to teach all aspects of the game. Your athlete will work with Coach Foley on the basic fundamentals of shooting, ball handling, and passing and will play in 1-on-1, 3-on-3, and 5-on-5 tournaments. There will also be other games and contests with chances to win great prizes. Coach Foley’s camps are known for bringing fun and excitement to basketball. 
    Dates and Time: June 16-20, July 14-18, July 28-August 1; 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

  • Boys Lacrosse (Gr. 2-5 I 6-8)

    The boys varsity lacrosse coach and his players will teach a range of fundamental skills in a fun, competitive atmosphere with daily games and contests on the field. This popular camp differentiates itself by providing a low player-to-coach ratio in order to dedicate greater attention to every child. Points of emphasis will include correct techniques for ground balls, throwing, catching, shooting, fast breaks, unsettled offense/defense, transition, and face-offs. Campers should bring their own equipment, including stick, helmet, gloves, shoulder pads, elbow pads, cleats, and mouthguard.

  • Boys Soccer (Gr. 2-5 | 6-8)

    Athletes will score a great summer experience by attending the popular Steward Soccer Camp! They will learn all the important skills of the game such as passing, shooting, trapping, and possession play. Camp will begin each day with a skill of the day, followed by technical training (fundamentals or skill games), and finally team play.

  • Brickz 4 Kidz (various grade level offerings)

    Campers will follow model plans designed by engineers and architects as they build with LEGO® bricks. The LEGO® project kits offered will give campers the opportunity to learn STEM-based principles through fun and educational play. These camps will help children improve fine motor skills, build self-esteem, and learn important classroom lessons such as organization and following directions. Campers will also have the opportunity to explore their imaginations through free play.

    Bricks: Extreme Ninjas (Gr. 2-5) 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Have your child venture into the mind of Ninjas in this Ninja-themed camp! 

    Advanced Robotics (Gr. 2-5)  Forces of Nature (PM). This advanced robotics camp will lean a little more toward coding than building. Campers will work on programming techniques, educational play, and fine motor skills!

    Bricks: City Engineers (Gr. 2-5) 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.  Have your child join us on the bustling city streets paved with LEGO® Bricks!  

    Bricks: World of Wizards (Gr. 2-5) 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Young wizards will build mystical worlds, craft magical creatures, and concoct LEGO potions in a realm where imagination knows no bounds – the Bricks 4 Kidz way! 

    June 23- 27 
    Bricks: Journey with Sharks (Gr. 2-5) 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Submerge into the deep blue with this new camp in 2025 using our expanded project kit. Campers will dive into a week of creating motorized sharks and intricate sea life using LEGO® Bricks.

    Bricks: Portal to Adventure (Gr. 2-5) 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Have your child join us as we find our adventures in brand-new builds with our expanded project kits! The kits include gears, axles, and motors to bring campers’ creations to life! 

    Advanced Robotics: Space Pioneers (Gr. 2-5) 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. This advanced robotic camp will lean a little more toward coding than building.  Campers will use a Scratch-based program to create movement with their builds in this Space-themed camp.  

    July 14-18
    Junior Robotics - Nature vs. Animals (Gr. 1-5) 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. This Junior Robotics camp will be centered around animals and things that live in nature. Campers will learn STEM-based principles, improve fine motor skills, and explore their imaginations! 

    Advanced Robotics - Amusement Park Builder (Gr. 2-5) 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. This advanced robotic camp will lean a little more toward coding than building.  Campers will use a Scratch-based program to create movement with their builds in this Amusement Park-based camp.

    Bricks: Super Heroes (Gr. 2-5) 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Have your child join our LEGO® Super Powered Camp! We’ll build our favorite superheroes and maybe create some of our own!  
     
    July 21-25
    Junior Robotics - Ticket to Ride (Gr. 1-5) 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Builds for this introduction to robotics camp will focus on carnival rides. Campers will also learn basic programming skills as they program their creations to move using the specially designed software for our LEGO® builds.  The camp will consist of equal parts building and coding.

    Bricks: Creating and Crafting (Gr. 2-5) 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Campers will follow model plans designed by engineers and architects as they build with LEGO® Bricks and have ample opportunities to craft things like perler beads, mosaics, free play, and more! 

    July 28- August 1
    Bricks: Roblocks (Gr. 2-5) 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.  Join us for a camp based around one of the most popular online games! The kits include gears, axles, and motors to bring campers’ creations to life!  

    Advanced Robotics- A Galaxy Far Far Away (Gr. 2-5)  1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Have your child join our camp to learn the ways of the Force! Our LEGO® project kits offer campers the opportunity to learn STEM-based principles through fun, educational play.   

    August 4-8

    Advanced Robotics: Space Pioneers (Gr. 2-5) 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. This advanced robotic camp will lean a little more toward coding than building.  Campers will use a Scratch-based program to create movement with their builds in this Space-themed camp. 

    August 11-15
    Bricks: Best Builds (Gr. 2-5) 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Want to find out which Bricks4Kidz builds kids have loved the most over the years?  Have your child join us as we build the best of the best in this camp!  

    Bricks: Jurassic Brick Land (Gr. 2-5) 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Have your child travel back to the time when Dinosaurs ruled the Earth! Campers will follow model plans designed by engineers and architects as they build with LEGO® Bricks. 

  • Cartooning Camp (Gr. 3-5)

    In Cartooning Camp, campers will learn the definition, history, and key elements of creating successful cartoons. They will also learn to draw cartoon characters through guided drawing and live demonstrations, develop their own original cartoon character, and create an original graphic novel or comic strip using their newfound cartooning skills! 
    Date and Time: July 28 - August 1; 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.

  • Championship Girls Basketball (Gr. 3-5 I 6-8)

    State-champion coach Kara Bacile will lead your athlete through the basic fundamentals of shooting, ball handling, and passing while focusing on individual skills as well as team play. Campers will have fun learning the technical, physical, and strategic skills of basketball in an appropriate way based on skill level. Players will work on drills and scrimmage as 2 v 2, 3 v 3, and full games. Whether new to the sport or an experienced player, campers will definitely leave as better players.

  • Cheerleading (Gr. 2-5)

  • Chess and Board Game Camp (Gr. 3-5)

    Chess RVA teaches your child how to play chess and become a better player. Playing chess helps kids think more clearly and improves math and reading skills. Classes include both instruction and supervised play. Chess RVA offers all the tools you will need to introduce chess to beginners or guide the more experienced player toward competitive play. Other board games such as Backgammon, Blokus, Mancala, Q-bitz, and Set will be used to help expand the strategic mind.

  • Codemoji 2.0: Code It! (Gr. 3-5)

    Codemoji’s Code It program’s mission is simple: teach students to enjoy all things related to coding and the web while building problem-solving and creative thinking skills. Students build animations, websites, and video games; explore multiple coding languages; program robots; create STEM-based projects both online and offline; and are encouraged to share their projects when they get home. Students also work with interactive circuit boards to understand the basics of currents and work with their teacher to build a handful of fun hands-on projects.

  • Codemoji: Creative Coding (Gr. 1-2)

    Students will learn the basics of coding and computer science as they are immersed in STEM activities. Students will collaborate to program robots to complete tasks, work with emojis as they dive into the Codemoji platform, and participate in offline unplugged coding activities and games. Throughout the program, students will design a website and learn to utilize their newly acquired coding skills to advance through interactive lessons. The Codemoji program will challenge your students as they advance through HTML, CSS, and JS coding basics and will promote the desire to continue their coding learning outside of the classroom.

    Calling all future detectives!   • Girls Lacrosse (Gr. 2-5 | 6-8)

    Learn the fundamentals of Lacrosse with Lisa Moore, Steward’s varsity lacrosse coach. Girls will learn techniques for shooting, passing, and on-and-off-ball movement and develop a love for the game of lacrosse. Campers should bring their own equipment, including a stick, helmet, gloves, shoulder pads, elbow pads, cleats, and mouthguard. A limited supply of equipment will be available to new campers.

    Athletes will score a great summer experience by attending the popular Steward Soccer Camp!     Campers will sample several musical instruments throughout the week and refine rhythm and melody. Participants will have the opportunity to learn to play songs as a group and individually. Campers will discover a new passion for music and learn the basics of rhythm and musical theory.   • Jewelry Making (Gr. 3-5 | 6-8)

    During this class, students will learn how to create beautiful handmade jewelry from professional designer Kathy Karmolinski.     The official Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy comes to The Steward School to offer the same high-performance tennis methodology and training used at the highly successful official Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, Spain. Juniors in Grades 4-10 work with coaches from the Rafa Nadal Academy with both on- and off-court training.     Join us for a midsummer week of adventures and activities off campus.     Tap into the incredible practice of stop-motion film production and learn the technique from the ground up. Using both stop-motion and paper animation techniques, plus scripting, students can create the stories of their choosing.     What’s the only team sport where you need your teammates to score? It's Ultimate Frisbee!   • Virginia Outside “Adventure Fishing” (Gr. 4-5 | 6-8)

    This camp focuses on teaching the entire process of fishing from rigging rods, tying knots, and baiting hooks to driving boats with trolling motors, all while introducing campers to the great wealth of fishing opportunities the area has to offer. We have access to some great private ponds, where campers are assured success; the camp will split time between the ponds and the James River, where we will chase down our own river monsters (flathead and blue catfish up to 30 lbs.) right here in the city.

  • Virginia Outside “Fish N’ Fun” (Gr. 1-3)

    This one-week fishing camp is designed to spark interest in fishing and teach basic tactics as well as get our younger campers outdoors and having fun. We fish in a combination of public and private ponds and reservoirs, and will often find an hour to splash around in a local river in search of crayfish, frogs, and salamanders. Safety is our number one priority, so all campers will wear life jackets when in the water or on a boat. We maintain a 1-to-5 counselor-to-camper ratio to ensure every camper gets some one-on-one time each day to advance their skills. Virginia Outside provides all bait and tackle, rods and reels, and life jackets.

  • Virginia Outside “Mountain Biking” (Gr. 3-5 | 6-8)

    Richmond has some of the best urban mountain biking trails around. Join our staff of experienced riders for a week on the trails this summer. Campers will develop beginner and intermediate mountain biking skills, including steering, shifting, hill climbing and descending, log hopping, dodging obstacles, etiquette, maintenance, safety, and more. Campers ride in the morning, take a midday break for an activity like tubing or snorkeling on the James River, and then get back on the bikes in the afternoon. We provide bikes and helmets, but campers are also welcome to bring their own. Campers should know how to ride a bike before signing up for this camp.

  • Virginia Outside “Young Adventurers” Camp (Gr. 2-4)

    This adventure camp is a great way to introduce new activities such as fishing, hiking, indoor rock climbing, paddling, tubing, and more! Campers will also spend time creating outdoor-themed crafts and playing games! We create a safe space for kids to be kids and enjoy time outside. Having fun, learning for themselves, a progression of skill development, and building a base that your child will carry for life are just some of the things they will acquire in our wonderful outdoor playground.

  • Wonderful Words (Gr. 1-2)

    This full-day camp addresses the literacy needs of children at all levels of ability. Reading instruction is designed to build decoding skills, fluency, comprehension, and an understanding of how to choose appropriate reading material (“just right” books). Writing instruction is focused on the quality of storytelling and the mechanics of writing. Daily word work builds skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling, and handwriting.

  • A Star is Born (Gr. 6-8)

    Prepare for the big audition in this theatrical skills camp. Campers will learn and refine their audition techniques, reading lines, audition preparation, and presence. The camp will have campers prepare for a role as they learn how to increase their stage charisma and energy. Prior theater experience is not required.

  • All Sports K&L (Gr. 3-5 | 6-8)

    This full-day sports camp will take place at K&L Sports in nearby Montpelier with transportation provided to and from Steward each day. K&L Sports promotes sportsmanship and camaraderie while increasing athletic skill level, using a 6-to-1 student-to-pro ratio. Each week, the activities include tennis, basketball, baseball, horseshoes, swimming, football, soccer, whiffle ball, dodgeball, kickball, frisbee, hiking, and other field and team games.

  • Archery (Gr. 5-8)

    Students will safely learn the basics of archery from range safety, shooting form, parts of the bow, and sportsmanship. During this camp, they will be able to practice with a variety of bows and learn different types of archery, all while improving their technique. Instruction is provided by the VA Archery Center, and all equipment will be provided.

  • Baseball (Gr. 1-5 | 6-7)

    Steward’s Baseball Camp focuses on fundamentals and skill development. Each day, there is an exciting game, and each camper receives individualized attention and drills for continued improvement at home. The daily routine will include work on throwing, fielding, and hitting, followed by the opportunity to apply new and improved skills in the games. Each camper will leave camp a better baseball player with a focus on the fundamentals of the game.

  • Best Week of Summer (Gr. K-6)

    To close out the summer, join us for an extra-fun, week-long extravaganza of on-campus activities and off-campus field trips. Students will meet at Steward each morning and head off for full- and half-day adventures. Examples of activities include arts and crafts, trips to Fredericksburg FunLand or Go Ape ropes course, and other exciting opportunities in and around the Richmond area.   • Bob Foley’s Next Level Basketball (Gr. 1-5 | 6-8 | 9)

    Next Level Basketball camp is designed to teach all aspects of the game. Your athlete will work with Coach Foley on the basic fundamentals of shooting, ball handling, and passing and will play in 1-on-1, 3-on-3, and 5-on-5 tournaments. There will also be other games and contests with chances to win great prizes. Coach Foley’s camps are known for bringing fun and excitement to basketball.

  • Boys Lacrosse (Gr. 2-5 | 6-8)

    The boys varsity lacrosse coach and his players will teach a range of fundamental skills in a fun, competitive atmosphere with daily games and contests on the field. This popular camp differentiates itself by providing a low player-to-coach ratio in order to dedicate greater attention to every child. Points of emphasis will include correct techniques for ground balls, throwing, catching, shooting, fast breaks, unsettled offense/defense, transition, and face-offs. Campers should bring their own equipment, including stick, helmet, gloves, shoulder pads, elbow pads, cleats, and mouthguard.

  • Championship Girls Basketball (Gr. 3-5 I 6-8)

    State-champion coach Kara Bacile will lead your athlete through the basic fundamentals of shooting, ball handling, and passing while focusing on individual skills as well as team play. Campers will have fun learning the technical, physical, and strategic skills of basketball in an appropriate way based on skill level. Players will work on drills and scrimmage as 2 v 2, 3 v 3, and full games. Whether new to the sport or an experienced player, campers will definitely leave as better players.

  • Community Service Sampler (Gr. 8-11)

    Part of being a good steward in the community is contributing to projects that help others. This week of service will include time spent with multiple organizations that make a significant impact on many lives. Each morning, the Steward bus will depart campus with a team of young volunteers and Steward faculty who will spend the day putting themselves to work in a meaningful way. Hours can be applied to school-required community service credit.

  • Disney Deep Dive (Gr. 6-8)

    Do you love Disney movies and want to learn more? In this camp, students will watch their favorite classic Disney movies and analyze the plot, characters, symbolism, and historical significance of these films. Students will learn critical thinking skills through engaging content that they know and love. We will have group discussions, practice structuring argumentative essays, and learn how to catch symbolic details that many moviegoers miss when they watch these Disney classics.

  • Dungeons and Dragons (Gr. 6-9)

    Grab some dice and join your friends as we delve into dark dungeons and face off against horrifying monsters. Join us to learn to play Dungeons and Dragons, then choose a character and take part in telling an epic cooperative story of high fantasy. We’ll use creativity, strategy, and teamwork to solve puzzles, explore mazes, battle dragons, save the day, and steal the treasure.     Join us for the Global Issues Summit and prepare to engage in a week of playful collaboration and critical thinking.     Create a graphic novel using self-generated and computer-generated art, working to put together the perfect story.   • Introduction to Python (Gr. 6-8)

    Students explore the basics of coding and programming language to create scripts, carry out commands, and have interactive fun.   • Jewelry Making (Gr. 3-5 | 6-8)

    During this class, students will learn how to create beautiful handmade jewelry from professional designer Kathy Karmolinski.   • Law and Order: SCU (Special Camps Unit)  (Gr. 6-8)

    Calling all future lawyers, detectives, and judges! At Law & Order Camp, middle schoolers dive into the exciting world of law, where they’ll learn how real trials work and practice arguing cases just like in a courtroom. Through hands-on activities and mock trials, campers will explore key roles, from attorneys to witnesses to the jury. By the end of the week, they’ll have the skills to present evidence, build cases, and even object in court! Our camp coaches will guide each camper as they develop confidence, critical thinking, and teamwork.

  • Middle School Maker Camp (Gr. 6-8)

    Come spend a week in our state-of-the-art makerspace and get creative with Tinkercad and Thingiverse to create a 3-D print! We will also dive into Silhouette Cameo software to create custom vinyl stickers, use sewing machines to make a fabric bookmark, work with Canva and the button maker to create custom buttons, and use LEGO® bricks and cardboard to create a stop-motion movie! You won’t want to miss this project-heavy experience.

    Students will learn skills such as communicating with peers and instructors, time management and organization, note-taking and test preparation.     This camp is designed for budding middle school musicians who are ready to dive deeper into the art of music-making.     Step into the spotlight and bring stories to life in My Musical Life! This camp is perfect for middle schoolers who love theater and want to explore the world of musical performance.     Step into a world of gods, heroes, and magical creatures at Mythical Adventures camp! Campers will dive into epic stories, create their own myth-inspired art, and participate in challenges that test their bravery and teamwork, just like legendary heroes.   • Pop Trivia! (Gr. 6-8)

  • Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy (Gr. 4-10)

    The official Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy comes to The Steward School to offer the same high-performance tennis methodology and training used at the highly successful official Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, Spain. Juniors in Grades 4-10 work with coaches from the Rafa Nadal Academy with both on- and off-court training.   • Spartan Counselor Apprentices (Steward students only - Gr. 7-11)

    Current Steward students are invited to apply for the Spartan Counselor Apprentice (SCA) program. Learning to be helpful stewards is an important component of the early teen years, and this program is a fantastic way for students in rising grades 7–11 to take leadership roles during the summer. They will work with a variety of teachers and students each week, leading younger groups around campus and assisting instructors with lessons. 

    Through this program, the young counselors will help our talented teachers by serving as volunteers in a low-key setting. Interested students should submit applications and will take part in short interviews as part of the selection process. The application includes a place for parents to mark the weeks their students are available during the summer. Students who need to submit volunteer hours for school can apply their working time from this experience.

    Applications can be found on the Steward website and will open on January 6, 2025. Applicants will be notified by February 7, 2025. Due to the success of this program in recent years and our need to make sure the SCAs enjoy rewarding experiences, limited spaces are available each week. This program is limited to current Steward students.

  • Sports Conditioning (Gr. 6-8 | 9)

    In our Sports Conditioning Camp, campers will work on strength training, speed and agility training, flexibility training, and injury prevention, all while playing different sports. They will learn the basic science behind training, how training translates into sports, and how to exercise properly. And we will have fun doing it!

  • Summer Chefs (Gr. 1-5 | 6-8)

    Get ready for a week of culinary creativity and fun! In this hands-on cooking camp, campers will explore the joys of making delicious meals from scratch. From learning kitchen safety and food preparation to mastering basic techniques to creating tasty recipes from around the world, campers will gain confidence in the kitchen while having a blast. Campers will have a chance to eat what they make during class and have recipes to take home to share with their families.

  • Ultimate Frisbee (Gr. 1-5| 6-8)

    What’s the only team sport where you need your teammates to score? It's Ultimate Frisbee! Come learn the rules and spirit of one of the fastest-growing games, where everyone can be a quarterback and wide receiver! This camp will be coached by Andy Routzahn, former Richmond club player, division III college coach, USA Ultimate College Coordinator of the Year, and a Steward third-grade teacher.

  • Virginia Outside “Adventure Fishing” (Gr. 4-5 | 6-8) 

    This camp focuses on teaching the entire process of fishing from rigging rods, tying knots, and baiting hooks to driving boats with trolling motors, all while introducing campers to the great wealth of fishing opportunities the area has to offer. We have access to some great private ponds, where campers are assured success; the camp will split time between the ponds and the James River, where we will chase down our own river monsters (flathead and blue catfish up to 30 lbs.) right here in the city.

  • Virginia Outside “Mountain Biking” (Gr. 3-5 | 6-8)

    Richmond has some of the best urban mountain biking trails around. Join our staff of experienced riders for a week on the trails this summer. Campers will develop beginner and intermediate mountain biking skills, including steering, shifting, hill climbing and descending, log hopping, dodging obstacles, etiquette, maintenance, safety, and more. Campers ride in the morning, take a midday break for an activity like tubing or snorkeling on the James River, and then get back on the bikes in the afternoon. We provide bikes and helmets, but campers are also welcome to bring their own. Campers should know how to ride a bike before signing up for this camp.

Your athlete will work with Coach Foley on the basic fundamentals of shooting, ball handling, and passing and will play in 1-on-1, 3-on-3, and 5-on-5 tournaments. There will also be other games and contests with chances to win great prizes. Coach Foley’s camps are known for bringing fun and excitement to basketball.

  • Cinema Camp (Gr. 8-11)

    Calling the next Martin Scorsese or Kathryn Bigelow! Unlock your inner auteur while learning filmmaking techniques and terminology. Campers will apply these techniques in their own short films and also critically review and analyze scenes from famous movies. Will an Academy Award or Rotten Tomatoes await you at the podium?

  • College Essay Prep Seminar (Gr. 9-12)

    Prepare for the upcoming college application process in this week-long workshop. Students will focus on creating and crafting the perfect essay, organizing and preparing for the process, application sections and effective email and communication strategies.

  • Community Service Sampler (Gr. 8-11)

    Part of being a good steward in the community is contributing to projects that help others. This week of service will include time spent with multiple organizations that make a significant impact on many lives. Each morning, the Steward bus will depart campus with a team of young volunteers and Steward faculty who will spend the day putting themselves to work in a meaningful way. Hours can be applied to school-required community service credit.

  • Driver’s Education (AGES 15-18)

    RVA Driving Academy instructors will guide soon-to-be drivers through the classroom portion of driver’s education for nine days in June. Students may register for the classroom session only and/or behind-the-wheel instruction. The classroom curriculum will include the Virginia Department of Education-certified 10-module driver’s education curriculum. Attendance at all sessions is mandatory. The seven required behind-the-wheel sessions will be scheduled once classes begin. Behind-the-wheel scheduling and payment will be coordinated with RVA Driving Academy at the conclusion of the classroom sessions.
    Dates and Time: The Classroom Session will be June 3-7 and June 9-13, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

  • Dungeons and Dragons (Gr. 6-9)

    Grab some dice and join your friends as we delve into dark dungeons and face off against horrifying monsters. Join us to learn to play Dungeons and Dragons, then choose a character and take part in telling an epic cooperative story of high fantasy. We’ll use creativity, strategy, and teamwork to solve puzzles, explore mazes, battle dragons, save the day, and steal the treasure. Both new and experienced players are welcome, and all necessary materials will be provided.

  • G.U.R.L.L (Girls Using Real Life Lessons) (Gr. 1-5 | 6-8 | 9-12)

    Girls of all ages will come together to discover their unique strengths, build confidence, and develop leadership skills that will last a lifetime. With three separate sessions—one for high school, one for middle school, and one for elementary school—campers will connect with like-minded friends, participate in inspiring activities, and learn from female leaders and mentors. Through engaging workshops, team-building exercises, and self-expression activities, each camper will uncover her voice, vision, and power.

  • Leadership Camp (Gr. 6-8 | 9-12)

    Join us for the Leadership Camp and learn how to be a great leader! Through various activities, students will discover their leadership styles, strengths, and areas for growth. Campers will engage in team-building activities, leadership games, and interactive workshops exploring topics like problem-solving, public speaking, and conflict resolution.

  • Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy (Gr. 4-10)

    The official Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy comes to The Steward School to offer the same high-performance tennis methodology and training used at the highly successful official Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, Spain. Juniors in Grades 4-10 work with coaches from the Rafa Nadal Academy with both on- and off-court training. The camp appeals to a range of players and offers a total tennis experience not available anywhere else. Join the ultimate tennis camp as we travel to Virginia this summer.   • SAT Prep (Gr. 10-12) 

    This class covers all areas of the SAT test. Verbal instruction will focus on techniques for achievement in both the language and critical reading sections while also strengthening writing and editing skills. Math instruction will review mathematical skills, including number sense, algebra, geometry, probability, and statistics, while learning how to approach multi-layer questions.
    Date and Time: July 28 - August 1; 9 a.m.-12 p.m. 
    Cost: $300 (includes up-to-date SAT Prep and Practice Book with practice tests)

  • Spartan Counselor Apprentices (Steward students only - Gr. 7-11)

    Current Steward students are invited to apply for the Spartan Counselor Apprentice (SCA) program. Learning to be helpful stewards is an important component of the early teen years, and this program is a fantastic way for students in rising grades 7–11 to take leadership roles during the summer. They will work with a variety of teachers and students each week, leading younger groups around campus and assisting instructors with lessons. 

    Through this program, the young counselors will help our talented teachers by serving as volunteers in a low-key setting. Interested students should submit applications and will take part in short interviews as part of the selection process. The application includes a place for parents to mark the weeks their students are available during the summer. Students who need to submit volunteer hours for school can apply their working time from this experience.

    Applications can be found on the Steward website and will open on January 6, 2025. Applicants will be notified by February 7, 2025. Due to the success of this program in recent years and our need to make sure the SCAs enjoy rewarding experiences, limited spaces are available each week. This program is limited to current Steward students. 

    Grades: Rising 7–11

  • Sports Conditioning (Gr. 6-8 | 9)

    In our Sports Conditioning Camp, campers will work on strength training, speed and agility training, flexibility training, and injury prevention, all while playing different sports. They will learn the basic science behind training, how training translates into sports, and how to exercise properly. And we will have fun doing it!

  • Survivalist: Wilderness Education (Gr. 6-8 | 9)

    Calling all young adventurers! Our Survivalist: Wilderness Education camp is designed for students who are ready to dive into the world of outdoor survival and wilderness skills. Campers will learn essentials like building shelter, starting a fire, identifying edible plants, and navigating with a compass. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, they’ll practice teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking—all while gaining confidence in the great outdoors. This hands-on, adventure-packed camp is perfect for curious minds and brave spirits eager to connect with nature and develop essential life skills!

  • What makes Steward’s summer camps unique?

    The Summer Experience offers many choices for families who want half-day or full-day camp options at a convenient location. In addition to top-notch academic camps, we are proud to offer unusual art camps, at which campers create high-quality pieces; innovation camps in the Bryan Innovation Lab, which is a unique facility in itself; and athletic camps that focus on both fundamentals of the game and good sportsmanship. Our camps are designed to mirror the personal experience of our educational philosophy by providing individual connections with each camper, and our overall summer programming provides a multitude of social, academic, athletic, and artistic opportunities that align with your child’s interests.

  • What is a typical day of camp?

    Our camp schedule is customizable, with a variety of morning, afternoon, and full-day options. This model allows each family to plan the best summer for their child. A supplemental lunch option is offered, as well as early drop-off and aftercare.

  • What are the general camp hours?

    • General drop-off 8:40-8:55 a.m. 
    • Morning camp pickup: 12-12:30 p.m.
    • Afternoon camp pickup: 4-4:30 p.m.
      • For those who need additional coverage, early drop-off is available as early as 7:45 a.m., and aftercare is available until 6 p.m. Please select "early drop-off" and/or “aftercare” during the registration process.

  • My child does not attend Steward during the regular school year. Can they register for the Summer Experience?

    Yes! Steward camps feature a wide range of students from throughout the metro Richmond area and surrounding counties. In the past our camps have attracted approximately 50% non-Steward students.

  • Can I register for camp online?

    All Summer Experience registration takes place online. Click here to register.

  • Can I pay for summer camps with a credit card or by using a student account?

    All summer camp registrations before June 1, 2025, require a non-refundable $50 deposit per camp with a credit card. After June 1, 2025, all camp fees will no longer be refundable. Should a conflict occur, registrations may be transferred to an alternate week if space is available. Balances may be paid by credit card or check. Unfortunately, we are not able to process camp registrations through the Steward student account program.

    There are minimum class sizes for all camps and programs. The Steward School reserves the right to cancel any course, program, or activity as necessary. In such cases, a full refund will be made. Balances may be paid by credit card. In the event of extreme weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances, we reserve the right to cancel or postpone any part of camp for the safety of the campers. We cannot provide a refund for any cancellation or postponement due to extreme circumstances/forces of nature.

  • How will I know if a camp is full?

    Camps that are full will display “Add to Waitlist” once you enter the registration portal. A camper will not be charged or required to submit a deposit for the waitlist. Should space become available, summer staff will contact you via email, and you will have the option to join the camp or remove your camper from the waitlist. 

    Many families find it helpful to register for a second choice if the primary choice is full. You will have the option to choose which camp your camper attends should space become available. Please reach out to Camps@stewardschool.org with questions regarding the waitlist.

  • I have more than one child who wants to attend a Summer Experience camp. Do I have to submit more than one registration form?

    You will need to complete a profile for each child. If they were a Summer Experience camper in previous summers, your information should be available in your CampBrain account. You are encouraged to review the camper and medical information to ensure that they are up-to-date. Please email camps@stewardschool.org if you are having trouble accessing your account.
