The Steward School’s Spartan Club members —  faculty, staff, parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends — know that athletics can add a powerful dimension to a student’s life. Our athletes sharpen their teamwork and leadership skills, develop confidence, and make lifelong friends … all under the mentorship of dedicated coaches. 

The Spartan Club is guided by the executive team of Chuck Wingfield (president; father of Chase ’23, Spencer ’25, and Mason ’31), Gerald Walsh (vice president; father of Grady ’22 and Wesley ’24), and Mike Proctor (treasurer; father of Caden ’25 and Gavin ’28): spirited Spartans whose blue-and-gold pride is something to cheer about!

The Spartan Club supports Steward’s athletic programs through annual memberships, which throughout the years have helped fund the purchase of athletic equipment, weight room essentials, windscreens for the baseball field and tennis courts, streaming equipment, branded equipment for the girls volleyball team … even a bus to transport our hardworking athletes and coaches! The Spartan Club also fundraises by running the concession stand.

Each year, the Spartan Club sponsors the Ray Tate Spartan Golf Classic, an invitational that celebrated its 20th anniversary and raised more than $65,000 in 2023. A whopping 125 golfers participated, and generous sponsors made for an extra-special day on the links. Each year, a portion of the proceeds from the Golf Classic are used for $1,000 scholarships that recognize two exemplary Steward student-athletes. We are so proud of the 2023 Ray Tate Student-Athlete Scholarship recipients, Grace Virginia Deal ’24 and Ian O’Hallaron ’24. 

With more than 40 competitive teams (and nearly 75 percent of Middle/Upper School students participating in athletics), our athletic program is an important part of a well-rounded school experience.
