Taking the Stage

The Steward School
A captivating year of theatre at Steward
Creative expression is part of every Spartan’s school experience. In the classroom and on the stage, students learn new skills, discover passions, and build confidence.

The 2024-25 year in theatre at Steward is an exciting mix of classic and modern, with something for everyone! Make plans now to watch as our talented Spartans take the stage. All performances are free, and all take place in the Lora M. Robins Theatre (within the Paul R. Cramer Center for the Arts). Map and Directions

And the next time you’re at the Lora M. Robins Theatre, check out the display of Steward performance history, all the way back to 1977. Upstairs, you’ll find the Imirie Gallery filled with framed photos of every mainstage production through the winter of 2024; it was updated in April 2024 by ArtLink volunteers. Photos from “One Hit Wonder” (last spring’s performance) and the 2024-25 shows will be added next summer.

Below is the schedule for this year’s theatre productions:

“Arsenic and Old Lace”
November 7-9, 2024; 7 p.m.
By Joseph Kesselring; directed by Lower School Theatre and Upper School Acting Teacher Craig Smith

Mortimer Brewster, a newspaper drama critic, playwright, and author known for his diatribes against marriage, suddenly falls in love and gets married. But when he makes a quick trip home to tell his two maiden aunts, he finds out that his aunts have a very unusual hobby. Set in 1941 in Brooklyn, “Arsenic and Old Lace” is a classic black comedy. Bonus: Join us for Dinner and a Show on November 7, presented by ArtLink

“Spamalot”
February 7-9, 2025 Note: This is a change from the original school calendar.
Showtimes: February 7 and 8 at 7 p.m.; February 9 at 2 p.m.
Directed by Middle School Theatre/Upper School Public Speaking Teacher Susan Sanford

The winter mainstage production will be "Spamalot.” Inspired by the classic comedy film, "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," the musical follows King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table and their quest to find the holy grail. Hilarious songs, fantastic characters, and irreverent jokes about Broadway, killer rabbits, and flying cows will keep the audience laughing from beginning to end.

“Oliver!”
April 24-26, 2025; 7 p.m.
Directed by Lower School Theatre and Upper School Acting Teacher Craig Smith

Lionel Bart's classic musical based on the Charles Dickens novel, "Oliver Twist," tells the story of Oliver, a malnourished orphan who becomes the neglected apprentice of an undertaker. Oliver escapes to London and finds acceptance among a group of petty thieves and pickpockets led by the elderly Fagin. Find out what happens when Oliver is captured for a theft he did not commit. "Oliver!" is a musical theatre masterpiece, perfectly showcasing the talents of a large ensemble cast as they bring classic characters and a classic score to life.
