Standout Spartans: Porter Cram '29, George Guthrie '29, and Theo Hirsch '26

The Steward School
Spartans recognized for musical talent
Steward instrumental musicians recently earned well-deserved accolades!

Congratulations to Porter Cram ’29 for earning a spot in the alto saxophone section of the 2025 District One Middle School Concert Band, to George Guthrie ’29 for earning a spot in the bass section for the 2025 Central Regional Orchestra, and to Theo Hirsch ’26 for earning a spot in the percussion section of the 2025 District One Concert Band.

Porter first picked up a saxophone in the fourth grade and has been passionate about music ever since.

“Ever since that time, I’ve played at prestigious summer camps and other out-of-school events. I’m thrilled that I’ve come this far with my music,” he said. “I love music so much because it’s where I belong and am accepted.”

George, now in his fourth year as a string bassist, said, “I have always found playing music addictive since it is a hobby that I can practice constantly, without perfecting, in an interactive and enjoyable way.”

Theo, a member of Steward’s concert, pep, and jazz bands, said being selected to participate in the 2025 District One Concert Band is an honor. He has been making music since the fourth grade when he started playing the drums.

“I enjoy being a part of the bands at Steward,” he said. “We have performed at talent nights and SpartaFest. I'm also in a jazz band outside of school, and we performed at the Tin Pan in Richmond. Working with others to make music is my favorite part of being a musician. The shared experience of performing live is a lot of fun. I look forward to being a percussionist in District Band for a couple of fun days!”

The District Band Concert will be held Saturday, February 1 at Highland Springs High School and the Central Regional Orchestra Concert will be held Saturday, February 8 at Randolph-Macon College.

“Congratulations to these hard-working Steward instrumentalists,” said Instrumental Music Teacher John McAlister. “They are dedicated, enthusiastic musicians, and I am thrilled that their talent has been recognized.”
