On Thursday, January 14, five members of the Steward community joined the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame at the second annual induction ceremony and reception. Alumni, former and current faculty and staff members, and other community members attended the celebration.
Upon arrival, attendees looked at framed photos and flipped through yearbooks from the inductees’ time at Steward. Director of Athletics Bruce Secrest opened the ceremony and Head of School Dan Frank closed. Each inductee was introduced by a family member or former colleague. The ceremony was followed by a lively reception in the Cramer Center.
Here are snippets from the introductory speech for each inductee:
Susan Cramer Twining ’84, introduced by Janet Rice:
- Captain of the 1982 field hockey team, which won Steward’s first-ever LIS championship
- Awarded the Steward Coaches Award and MVP for basketball (captain), field hockey, and tennis
- Selected for several All-LIS teams
- Daughter of Paul Cramer, former head of school at Steward
- Currently serves on the school’s Board of Trustees
“Admiration—that is what I have always had for Susan Cramer Twining … She was the youngest member of a family that transformed this institution. I always marveled at how she was able to enjoy a normal existence … while her Dad was the headmaster and her mother did absolutely everything else here … While she embraced her family’s involvement, Susan always traveled her own path … Susan Cramer always knew what it was like to really work hard for something. Thank God for her and her teammates who worked so hard to strive towards a goal of athletic success that truly launched our program.”
Ian M. Coddington, introduced by Janet Rice:
- Former dean of Upper School students, teacher, soccer and track coach, and advisor
- Founder of Steward’s Honor Council
- Designed and built a low and high ropes course for Steward’s athletic curriculum
“Ian Coddington — in my mind, a true renaissance man — is being inducted into The Steward School Athletic Hall of Fame. Quite an honor! But his impact on this school goes well beyond the athletic realm … It is kind of difficult to give you a true glimpse of Ian because he is so multi-faceted … Hired to teach P.E. and coach soccer, Cod teamed up with
Neil Turnage, and this dynamic duo guided the boys’ soccer program into its glory years … Once he became the US Dean of Students, all of us witnessed his ethics in action. I worked closely with him for 26 years, and this is a man of integrity and honor… He clearly helped students see the difference between right and wrong … Coddington is just steady, steady, steady—a man who was always willing to do what was necessary to help The Steward School.”
J. Michael Edwards ’03, introduced by Robin Edwards:- Served as award-winning captain of the state-championship basketball team
- Returned to Steward to coach basketball for several seasons; led JV basketball team to an undefeated season
“As early as the age of two, Mike began displaying his interest in athletics … He was excited when the decision was made to attend Steward. He was focused on being part of the Steward community and living up to the reputation which preceded him. He was committed to maintaining academic excellence in addition to his performance on the court … Mike gave 110 percent in every game. He truly played hard and always left a bit of himself on the court. He set the standards high for himself and expected the same of his teammates … [After graduation,] while working full-time at Bank of America and attending graduate school for his master’s degree in sports management, Mike took on the role of head coach of the JV squad … Those young men developed a unity that was seen on and off the court … It is a pleasure and an honor to introduce your next inductee, my son Mike Edwards.”
Jennifer J. Keller ’88, introduced by Ian Coddington:
- First Steward basketball player to score 1,000 points
- Honored with 20 varsity letters
- Member of Junior Olympic basketball team, 1985 field hockey championship team, and played softball, tennis, and track and field
- Won All-LIS and team honors
“In the early days of The Steward School … there were those extraordinary few girls who could transition between the girls and boys teams. Tonight we are honoring one of those extraordinary athletes. … Those who [coached her] speak of her quiet inner strength and leadership ability. She was never pulled from a game because of being tired, for having stopped playing, or from pitching an attitude … As corny as it may sound, she was the glue that held the team together…. [and] one of the most dominant and prolific varsity letter earners in Steward history … The Steward School is extremely proud to induct Jennifer Keller into the Athletic Hall of Fame.”
Donald E. Steeber, introduced by Margaret Hassan:
- Former director of athletics, director of facilities, teacher, and soccer and baseball coach
- Founder of Steward’s field hockey program
- Current member of Steward’s Board of Trustees
“Don is a unique individual, as I found out when we worked together … He built the folding bleachers for the new gym, the goals for the field hockey team … Even more fantastic and unusual was the fact that he cut out and sewed at least 15 plaid and pleated kilt skirts for the team! … Don and I found out early on that we were cut from the same cloth – organized, efficient, precise, etc. … We kept each other on our toes … I don’t know what we would have done without Don Steeber. He literally kept us going, and we could never thank him enough for all he did to move the school forward towards what it is today.”
